Oil well drilled at Native site

FRIDAY, MAY 17, 2002

Federal officials allowed an oil well to be drilled right in the center of a prehistoric Modoc village in Oregon but never knew of the site's significance.

Two studies were conducted but didn't reveal anything, The Klamath Falls Herald and News reported. Only until the paper pointed out that a burial site was desecrated did officials at the Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge realize the mistake.

The Klamath Tribes are reacting in anger to the disturbance.
