The Department of Justice will sue the state of Florida for alleged voting rights violations that occurred during the 2000 presidential election.

Ralph F. Boyd Jr., the assistant Attorney General for civil rights, made the announcement at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing yesterday. He said the three suits focus counties for alleged mistreatment of minority voters and other civil rights infractions.

President Bush defeated former vice president Al Gore based on election results from Florida. The Supreme Court refused to allow the recounting of votes.
