The California Assembly on Tuesday killed a measure that would have banned all Indian mascots in the state.

The vote was 35-29, with most Republicans and some Democrats opposing it. The measure had cleared two committees with almost no objections.

Assemblywoman Jackie Goldberg (D-Los Angeles) sponsored the bill. She criticized colleagues whom she said were unfairly comparing Native Americans to "ducks, and colors, instead of human beings."

"This is not a joke," she said on the floor.
