California state biologists on Wednesday recommended less stringent protections for a species of salmon fished by tribes.

In a report, the Department of Fish and Game urged a "threatened" listing for the coho salmon in the Klamath and Trinity rivers. These rivers flow through the Hoopa Valley and Yurok reservations.

On the other hand, the department recommended "endangered" status for salmon closer to San Francisco. Threat of extinction was cited in the report.

The state has been discussing the salmon status with environmentalists and ranchers. Tribes weren't invited to the talks.
