Native group boycotts subsistence talks

FRIDAY, MAY 31, 2002

The Alaska Federation of Natives boycotted subsistence talks arranged by Republican lawmakers.

AFN said the negotiations were a step backward and objected because allies in the business, religious and civil rights communities weren't invited. The boycotted led Sen. John Torgerson, a Republican from Kasilof, to cancel the session, which was to take place yesterday.

Republican lawmakers wanted to work out an agreement among Native, rural and sport fisherman groups.

AFN instead invited Republican leaders to a meeting in August.
