More than 50 caribou fell to their death during an avalanche in western Alaska, investigators of the mass carnage have concluded.

The caribou fell about 1,900 feet to the bottom of a ridge in the Kenai Mountains. The animals, believed to have died in late December, have been scavenged by predators and were only recently discovered by humans.
