MONDAY, JUNE 4, 2002 In an editorial, The Washington Post praises Maryland Gov. Parris N. Glendening for his veto a bill that would set a time standard for tribes seeking state recognition. The bill would have required the state to act within a 120-day period. But the paper says the legislation was a quick avenue to federal recognition and casinos. "Maryland can work on improving Native American access to benefits without opening up the state to casino gambling," the paper writes. "Already the tent has too many casino noses sniffing around."
