A joint Senate-House commission begins a closed-door investigation today into intelligence failures pre-September 11.

The inquiry is headed by Sen. Bob Graham (D-Fla.) and Rep. Porter J. Goss (R-Fla.). The lawmakers hope to find out what security agencies knew before the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

The commission has drawn criticism for moving too quickly, or too slowly, depending on who does the talking. A new staff director recently came on board.

In related terrorism news, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak says his country warned the United States of an attack by Osama bin Laden's followers a week before September 11. The CIA never received the information, a "senior" intelligence official told The New York Times.

The CIA claims it informed the FBI in January 2000 that one of the 20 suicide hijackers was tracked and should be flagged. The FBI has previously said it received no warning. Khalid Almihdhar was already in the U.S. when the CIA said it relayed the information in January 2000.
