Standing Rock Sioux tribal member Ron Volesky was defeated by a large margin in his attempt to seek the Democratic nomination for South Dakota governor.

Volesky, a state lawmaker, only captured 17 percent of the vote. Jim Abbott, a businessman and current president of the University of South Dakota, took 69 percent.

Abbott will face Mike Rounds, an insurance agent, in November. Rounds, with 45 percent of the vote, defeated state attorney general Mike Barnett, with 29 percent, for the GOP nomination.
