FRIDAY, JUNE 7, 2002

Red Earth, the arts and pow-wow fest, will kick off today in Oklahoma with a special ceremony at the state capitol.

The state is hoisting "The Guardian," a 22-foot tall bronze Indian statue, atop the capitol dome. Red Earth dancers, a drum group and a traditional blessing will accompany the event.

The ceremony is taking the place of the Red Earth parade that usually heralds the start of the three-day pow-wow.
