Minn. tribes see economic gains

MONDAY, JUNE 10, 2002 Minnesota's tribes showed economic improvement over the past decade, according to Census figures examined by The Minneapolis Star Tribune. The paper reports a rise in income and a drop in poverty and unemployment rates on reservations throughout the state. The improvement was tied to increased economic development, particularly the spread and advent of casinos. The changes were disparate, though, with tribes closest to urban areas benefiting most from gaming. Despite the gains, tribes also remain behind the state average in terms of income, poverty and jobless rates. Get the Story:
