TUESDAY, JUNE 11, 2002

The Piegan Institute was founded by some members of the Blackfeet Tribe of Montana who wanted to keep their language alive.

The institute opened the Nizipuhwahsin Center in 1995 to pass Piegan onto tribal children. The center has 36 students and has to turn away hopefuls.

The center adopted a language immersion model used at Native Hawaiian, Mohawk and Maori schools.
