A team of divers and scientists was able to rescue an orca stranded in a Washington bay on Thursday.

The recovery attempt was deemed risky but went off without a glitch. The 1,240-pound was airlifted to a federal research facility, where she will be fed and watched closely before being united with her mother in Canadian waters.

Tlingit tribal members performed a ceremony for the orca, considered sacred, on Wednesday. The killer whale was said to have responded favorably to the send-off.
