TUESDAY, JUNE 18, 2002

The National Park Service has received what is believed to be a record number of public comments about a proposal to ban snowmobiles in two national parks.

An estimated 350,000 comments were received on a study affecting the Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks. Of those comments, about 271,000 favored a phase-out of the snowmobiles while 62,000 supported their continued use.

A final report is due this fall.
