A coalition of tribal and local governments on Thursday proposed that the state of Wisconsin buy 5,000 acres of land to prevent a huge mine near a reservation.

Opposition to the 55 million-ton zinc-copper sulfide mine has been great. The operation would be house next to the Mole Lake Reservation, home to the Sokaogon Ojibwe Band.

The state has an interest in the mine and Gov. Scott McCallum (R) said he would consider the offer, which came without a suggested price tag and other details. The company which wants to develop the site, Nicolet Minerals, is willing to sell.
