Construction of a memorial to the Indian warriors who fought at the Battle of Little Bighorn is finally underway.

Little Bighorn Battlefield Superintendent Neil Mangum said the work has already eased tensions between the federal government and tribes. Sioux, Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes and tribal members have sought the memorial for years.

Members from the three tribes are heading off today on a 45-run from the Northern Cheyenne Reservation to the battlefield. The run, in its second year, starts at Deer Medicine Rocks, where a Sun Dance was held before the June 25, 1876, battle.

The $2.3 million memorial project is about 10 percent complete.
