A member of the Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma plans to run for Congress now that a close political friend is retiring.

Tom Cole is seeking the seat vacated by Rep. J.C. Watts (R-Okla.). Cole, a Republican strategist, helped Watts get elected.

Cole was mentioned as a potential candidate for assistant secretary for Indian affairs.
