WEDNESDAY, JULY 3, 2002

A federal grand jury in Arizona indicted an Apache tribal member on Tuesday for allegedly starting a fire that has strained racial tensions.

Leonard Gregg, 29, was indicted on two separate charges for starting the Pina Fire and the Rodeo Fire. The former was put out quickly by a White Mountain Apache tribal fire crew.

The second, the Rodeo Fire, merged with another human-sparked blaze to become the worst in the state's history. Along with the Chediski Fire, more than 460,000 acres of land have burned, half of which is on the Apache reservation.

The fire is about 70 percent contained.
