Opinion: Squabbling not BIA delays hurt tribes

"Mergers, pharmaceutical and tribal, are the big news around here, and I'd sure love to listen in as the Eastern Pequots and the Paucatuck Eastern Pequots negotiate the terms of the one forced upon them.

Publicly, it's all upbeat talk about joint powwows and drafting a single constitution. Now that the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs has recognized them as one tribe, it would be economic and political suicide not to present a united front.

But it's hard to believe that in our lifetime they'll be one big functional family, which suggests that a shared power arrangement that protects the minority party could be in the works. . ."
