Bill would clear Alaska on Native policy

FRIDAY, JULY 19, 2002 A spending bill under consideration in the Senate would clear the state of Alaska of penalties for not allowing Alaska Native organizations to self-insure. The state would normally lose its federal subsidy for unemployment programs because of the prohibition. Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) introduced language to an emergency appropriations bill to clear the penalty and ensure that Alaska Native organizations can provide their own unemployment insurance for employees.
