Name of new Okla. bridge draws dispute

THURSDAY, JULY 25, 2002 Two factions are battling to name a new bridge in Oklahoma. One group wants the bridge to honor Benjamin Pikey, a member of the Chickasaw Nation who built a low-water crossing over the South Canadian River in 1889. Chickasaw Nation Gov. Bill Anoatubby has been asked to support the designation. Another group wants the bridge named after Harry Schrock, who was married to a Choctaw woman. The state Transportation Commission actually approved the Schrock name but it has been put on hold pending a review of the Pikey claim. Get the Story:
