MONDAY, JULY 29, 2002

California tribes are rallying behind legislation that would give them veto power over development projects on sacred sites.

The bill was prompted by Secretary of Interior Gale Norton's reversal on a gold mine to be located on land sacred to the Quechan Nation. The Clinton administration denied development permits but Norton reopened consideration.

Corporate interests are opposing the legislation.
