THURSDAY, AUGUST 1, 2002

The United States has violated the human rights of two Western Shoshone sisters, a preliminary report by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights has found.

Mary and Carrie Dann asked the body to consider its land rights issues in Nevada. They cite an 1863 treaty which secured millions of acres of land for the Western Shoshone but which gradually fell into non-Indian hands.

The Senate Indian Affairs Committee is holding a hearing on a bill to distribute money for the "lost" land. A trust fund of $138 million exists.
