'Sacrilege' of Indian sites for a game

A new sport activity, based on an Internet web site, is drawing criticism from Arizona officials in charge of protecting historic and ancient Indian sites.

Called "geocaching," the sport is a scavenger game that is largely played on public lands. Organizers caution against harming artifacts but officials say participants are altering sites and changing the natural landscape.

"To treat our prehistoric people like this is sacrilege, and all for a game," Shelley Rasmussen, a state volunteer, told The Arizona Republic. "I have no problem with the game itself, as long as they stay away from our archaeological sites."
