R.I. holding gaming study hearings

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 7, 2002

A special commission approved by Rhode Island lawmakers held the second in a series of hearings on Tuesday night regarding gaming in the state.

The commission was authorized over the objections of the Narragansett Tribe, whose leaders have sought to open a casino for years. State law requires voter approval but the nine-month study hampered their latest quest.

Narragansett Chief Sachem Matthew Thomas and other tribal members attended the latest hearing but did not appear to get a chance to testify, according to The Providence Journal.
