Neb. panel to consider tribal gaming

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 7, 2002

The General Affairs Committee of the Nebraska Legislature will consider a proposal to allow up to nine tribal casinos in the state.

State Sen. DiAnna Schimek introduced the constitutional amendment at a special session this month. If lawmakers approve it, voters would be given the same choice in November.

The amendment competes with another initiative to allow video slot machines in bars, restaurants, race tracks and keno parlors throughout the state. Nebraska's four tribes would be allowed to open up to four casinos on their trust lands and up to five on special zones where gaming is allowed in the bordering state.

The tribes are the Omaha, the Ponca, the Santee Sioux and the Winnebago.
