Editorial: Toxic fish a problem for all

THURSDAY, AUGUST 8, 2002 Everyone in the Pacific Northwest should be concerned about a federal study that shows fish in the Columbia River are contaminated, The Seattle Post-Intelligencer says in an editorial. The paper says tribes and the Environmental Protection Agency will need to respond to concerns about eating fish. "The public needs sound advice, based on both good science and common sense," the paper writes. At issue is an EPA study showing that a traditional diet high in fish increases the risk of cancer. Due to salmon's importance in tribal culture, tribes are faced with tough questions such as whether or not to recommend reduced consumption. Get the Story:
