Navajo Nation representatives and New Mexico lawmakers met on Tuesday to discuss water rights and a proposal to build a water pipeline.

The tribe's water rights in the San Juan Basin have been litigated for years. A Navajo attorney believes a $20 million survey would help settle the issue.

The tribe is also wants a pipeline to be part of the settlement. The $52 million project, which would run from northern New Mexico to Gallup, is intended to benefit tribal members, the Jicarilla Apache Nation and the state.
