Dig opposed by Lakota activists delayed

FRIDAY, AUGUST 9, 2002

The National Park Service has delayed a fossil dig in the Badlands National Park of South Dakota.

NPS will meet with Oglala Lakota President John Steele on August 27 to discuss the dig. The land is within the Pine Ridge Reservation but administered by the federal government under a 1976 agreement.

Lakota activists say the dig is too close to an area where tribal ancestors gathered after the Wounded Knee Massacre of 1890.
