Neb. tribal gaming measure defeated

FRIDAY, AUGUST 9, 2002

Nebraska lawmakers on Thursday killed a proposal to allow tribes to open casinos.

The vote in committee was 6-2. It came hours after the state attorney general issued an opinion saying the initiative was out of the scope of the current special session, called to address budget issues.

Tribes are not allowed to operate Class III, or casino-style, games. The measure would have amended the state's constitution.
