City to apologize to Native activist
FRIDAY, AUGUST 9, 2002

A California city will apologize, thirty years late, to an American Indian activist whose totem pole was chopped down in 1973.

Adam "Fortunate Eagle" Nordwall carved the pole as a gift to the city. It depicts namesake Robert Livermore in the lap of an eagle.

City workers cut the bottom part out, prompting Nordwall to curse the sewer system. He will lift the curse at a special ceremony being planned.
