The race for Arizona's 1st Congressional District is attracting attention from the national political parties.

Nearly 40 percent of voters in the new district are Native American or Hispanic. Most Native voters are members of the Navajo Nation.

Democratic candidate George Cordova has been heavily courting Navajo voters. The tribe's presidential primary is September 10, the same day as the state and federal ones.

The new 7th district in Arizona has a number of candidates with tribal ties, including Sherry Smith. Smith has worked as a teacher on the Duckworth Shoshone Reservation in Nevada and also worked for the Quechan Nation and for the California Indian Education Center.
