Dispute arises over fish culverts

MONDAY, AUGUST 26, 2002 An Alaska Native corporation has come under fire for its views on fish culverts. Afognak Native Corp. told the state that it doesn't need a permit to place culverts on streams that may contain trout, grayling, Dolly Varden and other species. The corporation believes it only needs a permit when salmon are involved. But the state says the corporation has to follow the law and request approval. Biologists believe the culverts hurt fish. The corporation, along with a consortium of Native-owned timber companies, says business will suffer if state approval is required for every culvert. Get the Story:
