MONDAY, AUGUST 26, 2002 After a long hiatus, the infamous Pequot Letters are back! A sampling of the latest published by The New London Day of Connecticut. WHERE'S THE PROOF?
"For several years, I have read with great disdain the ongoing assault of the Mashantucket Pequots by Jeff Benedict. Reading past stories and editorials makes me wonder why the attacks? Do Indians have to prove who they are? If the accuser has evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the people are not what they claim, then let him produce it or be quiet. In a court of law, the burden of proof lies with the prosecution. . ."

"In 1983, President Ronald Reagan, Congress and the state of Connecticut all agreed that the Mashantucket were a Pequot Indian tribe. Years from now, the tribe may point to that acknowledgment as proof of its ancestral identity, but is it? The tribe never submitted any genealogical evidence, proving only that public servants will legislate anything, regardless of facts. . ."

"For some time now, there has been concern over the amount of land granted the Mashantuckets in the 1983 settlement and, most recently, the legitimacy of the tribe and its leader. Procuring the original map that was used to settle the Mashantucket land claim has been deemed critical to the former. While copies are available, and it is fairly clear that the area shown in the map outline is substantially greater than the 800 acres called out in the original claim, no legal action has been possible to resolve the error of potentially up to 1,200 acres. . ."

"John Hamilton was recognized as one of the Mohegan leaders for the purpose of pursuing the land claims against the state of Connecticut. His claim that Alice Story Hamilton appointed him grand sachem was mistaken. No one person appoints another as a chief or grand sachem. That can only be done by the tribal membership. Alice Story Hamilton was never known as queen of the Mohegans — American Indians never used English terms of royalty despite Europeans' continued application of them to us. . ."
