THURSDAY, AUGUST 29, 2002

A group of lawmakers in Nebraska issued a statement saying they oppose an attempt to legalize video slot machines.

Fourteen lawmakers signed the statement while others said they also opposed an upcoming ballot initiative. Business owners want to authorize video slot machines in bars, restaurants, race tracks and keno parlors throughout the state.

If passed, the initiative would make the games available to tribes. Currently, the tribes cannot offer slot machines or slot-like machines.
