The Northern Arizona University has received a $4.5 million grant to study cancer rates in Native Americans.

Native Americans have experienced a growth in cancers and cancer-related deaths, according to federal statistics. The rest of the nation has seen declines.

For example, gall bladder cancer rates among Native Americans increased by 10 percent from 1995 to 1999. Rates among other racial and ethnic groups fell.

Leukemia rose 10 percent and stomach cancer rose 10 percent as well.
