Pueblo's use of police funds questioned

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 2002 A July 2002 report from the Department of Justice questions how Picuris Pueblo in New Mexico has spent a $728,125 federal police grant. The tribe received the money from the Community Oriented Policing Service (COPS) program. But the audit said the tribe did not hire eight new full-time officers and one part-time officer. The tribe has since dissolved its police unit. The Bureau of Indian Affairs handles law enforcement at the pueblo. Get the Story:
