THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 2002

Secretary of State Colin Powell was interrupted by protesters during his speech on the final day of the United Nations World Summit on Sustainable Development.

Protesters were there to criticize Bush administration policies on the environment. Powell defended the United States and said the nation was addressing problems like global warming.

Participants in the summit reached a broad agreement on a wide variety of issues, from hunger to AIDS. Critics said the United States and other industrial nations watered down the pact by being pro-business.
