MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 2002

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is holding a public hearing on Thursday over a highway project that would affect wetlands near Haskell Indian Nations University in Kansas.

School officials, students and alumni have joined with conservation groups to oppose the highway expansion. The Kansas Department of Transportation needs federal permission to fill wetlands opponents say are sacred.
