WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2002

The Bush administration put the nation on "high alert" on Tuesday for the first time, citing potential terrorist attacks on U.S. interests abroad.

The threat applied primarily to facilities in Asia and the Middle East. But domestic security was also enhanced on the eve of the September 11 tragedy. Airspace over Washington was increased.

The alert system was instituted by the Office of Homeland Security.
