Connecticut's two senators on Tuesday introduced a rider to the Department of Interior budget bill to halt all federal recognition decisions until the process is reformed.

Sens. Christopher Dodd (D) and Joseph Lieberman (D) said the Bureau of Indian Affairs doesn't have its "house in order." They want Congress to pass their own bills to address the issue before restoring recognition duties to Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb.

One bill, S.1392, codifies the existing BIA recognition standards into law. The other, S.1393, provides $8 million in grants to petitioning groups or interested parties.
