Two controversial bills that benefit Alaska Natives passed the House Resources Committee on Thursday.

The first allows Alaska Native veterans who served in the Vietnam War to choose allotments. The second increases Native participation and contracting opportunities at national parks and refuges.

Both bills were opposed by the Bush administration and environmentalists. Sponsor Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska) blasted the groups at a hearing on the subject in June.
