The attorney for ex-Crow Nation chairman Clifford Bird In Ground intends to produce expert testimony "relating to the mental condition of the defendant bearing upon the issue of guilt," The Billings Gazette reports today.

The paper said the notice was made to a federal court in Montana in July. Bird in Ground was indicted for allegedly using tribal funds to buy vehicles for family members.

The paper further reports on additional court documents that show who allegedly received the vehicles. The federal government has seized a car that Bird in Ground allegedly bought for his brother using tribal funds.

Bird in Ground resigned in a letter dated September 5.
