FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 2002

The National Museum of the American Indian's first pow-wow at its new site in Washington, D.C., is historic, organizers and participants say.

"Our physical presence at the powwow and the opening of the museum in 2004 are proof positive that Native peoples and culture are still here," NMAI director Rick West told The Washington Post.

The pow-wow features a host of recognized circuit names. Head drums are the Black Lodge Singers and Cozad. Masters of ceremonies are Wallace Coffey and Dale Old Horn.

The event takes place tomorrow and Sunday.
