An Alaska Native regional corporation plans to build a huge coal power plant to supply rural villages with low-cost power.

Calista Corporation conducted a study on the benefits of the proposal, whose initial cost would be $192 million. The company says it would produce cheap electricity to consumers and other users.

Electricity bills in rural Alaska can run to more than $300 a month, without subsidies.
