WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 2002

Critics of federal recognition got a chance to air their complaints at a Senate hearing on Tuesday.

Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal and a local town leader testified about the process. They oppose the federal status of the historic Eastern Pequot Tribe.

The Senate Indian Affairs Committee also heard from Deputy Assistant Secretary Aurene Martin. She said the Bureau of Indian Affairs still hadn't completed a plan to reform the system.

Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb promised to finish the plan by June.
