Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii), chairman of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, is opposing an attempt to halt all federal recognition decisions.

"I can just about assure you it won't become law," Inouye said of the proposal, according to Gannett News Service.

Connecticut senators Chris Dodd (D) and Joe Lieberman (D) introduced a rider to a budget bill that prevents the Bureau of Indian Affairs from recognizing any tribes until the process is "reformed." The rider will prevents pending decisions from becoming final.
