Five Civilized land bill criticized
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2002

Two Oklahoma tribes are worried a land bill pending in Congress will subject them to the whims of the Cherokee Nation.

The Delaware Tribe and the United Keetowah Band of Cherokee Indians objected to provisions in the Five Nations Reform Act. The bill, which already passed the House, changes how restricted Indian allotments are handled.

The two tribes, which the Cherokee Nation in the past refused to acknowledge, say land owned by tribal members could end up being controlled by the Cherokee Nation.

The Five Civilized Nations are the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek and Seminole tribes. They support the bill because it will prevent the loss of individual Indian-owned land.
