Preservation officials in Mexico fear a dam proposed by their own government will destroy at least 18 culturally and historically significant Mayan sites.

Archaeologists also call the plan a major disaster. They say it would flood Mayan villages, including undiscovered ones.

Indian activists say the government is using the dam as part of a larger project to turn Indian communities into tourist attractions.

The dam will provide needed electricity, supporters argue.
