Japan will no longer oppose a bowhead whaling quota for Alaska Native subsistence hunting, a United States official said.

Japan led a campaign against indigenous hunting in Alaska and Siberia, Russia. The International Whaling Commission is set to reconsider the issue at a meeting in England on October 18.

Members of the Alaska Eskimo Whaling Commission will attend.
